mhhe: Good practice guidance on the use of self-help materials within IAPT services

This guide was produced following an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Conference held at the Queens Hotel in Leeds in February 2009. The conference had been organised in response to feedback from services and those attending training courses expressing a need for expert guidance on the use of self-help materials given the wide range of different materials and media all purporting to offer helpful advice and information to people about a range of problems and disorders.

A conference was organised with expert researchers and practitioners who had experience of developing self-help materials in order to discuss whether guidance should be forthcoming and in which form it should take. Rather than endorsing particular self-help materials that are available, the conference focused on attempting to derive a set of criteria by which both practitioners and people might be able to assess the utility and effectiveness of particular materials. It was agreed that these principles might provide the basis for a ‘Good Practice Guide' about how to choose and use self-help materials.

This guide has been written by the contributors to the conference

Download here

Social workers play a central role in promoting and securing the wellbeing of children, adults, families and communities.

This website is about the development of an independent National College of Social Work which could support, represent and raise the profile of social work and social workers.

The College does not exist yet.
mhhe: MA in Health Communication - University of Nottingham

The MA programme in Health Communication provides a unique opportunity to investigate language and communication in various health care contexts. The study of health communication is a rapidly expanding field and the distance learning programme has been designed to reflect the growing interest in and importance of health care communication. The course is run by the University's Health Language Research Group and is affiliated to the Schools of Nursing, Sociology and Social Policy, and English Studies, all of which look to communication as a way of making sense of health care.

Find out more.

mhhe: Adult social care law - Law Commission consultation

The adult social care project is concerned with reviewing the law relating to the provision of adult social care in England and Wales. The legislative framework for adult residential care, community care, adult protection and support for carers is inadequate, often incomprehensible and outdated. To this day, it remains a confusing patchwork of conflicting statues enacted over a period of 60 years. There is no single, modern statute to which service providers and service users can look to understand whether (and, if so, what kind of) services can or must be provided.

The overall aim of the project is to provide a clearer, modern and more cohesive framework for adult social care. The project has been split into three phases.

The first was the publication of a scoping report setting out the scope of the project and provide it with a detailed agenda for reform.

The second stage is the substantive law reform project, consisting of the publication of a consultation paper, undertaking a broad public consultation, analysing the responses and publishing a final report.

The third stage consists of production of a draft bill to implement the recommendations of our final report.

The project is currently at stage 2.

On 24 February 2010 a consultation paper was published setting out provisional proposals for law reform. This is to be followed by a four month period of public consultation, lasting until 1 July 2010.

Read more and contribute.

mhhe: Developing and embedding inclusive policy and practice in higher education

This report is an outcome of a facilitative change programme, Developing and Embedding Inclusive Policy and Practice in Higher Education, involving ten higher education institutional teams and led by the Higher Education Academy.

The programme ran from 2007 to 2008 and was open to all higher education institutions (HEIs) in the UK. It offered a framework to facilitate and support HEIs in the development and embedding of inclusive policies and/or practices to enhance the learning experience of students from under-represented groups. The programme created a space for institutions to focus on, and exchange ideas about, policy and practice development and implementation.

Over the course of the programme, the Academy conducted research to explore the institutional teams' experience of developing and embedding an aspect of inclusion related to disability equality and/or widening participation. The research involved a series of observations, reflective questions, institutional visits, focus groups and semi-structured interviews. It aimed to capture the ‘journey travelled' by the teams in managing and implementing an institution-wide change initiative. Ultimately, the research has contributed to a greater understanding of the processes involved in developing and embedding inclusion within policy and practice in HEIs.

Download here.

Can you contribute to the Developing an Inclusive Curriculum in Higher Education (DICHE) project?

mhhe: Institute of Psychiatry - take a look inside

A new video has been developed which provides a look behind the scenes at the IoP. Dean of the IoP - Professor Shitij Kapur, Professor Til Wykes, Dr Daniel Freeman and Professor Chris Shaw - leaders in the field of mental health and neuroscience - give insights into the different areas of research and training that take place at the Institute.

The video is aimed at prospective students including health science and psychology graduates and mental health practitioners, but it is also a unique opportunity for anyone to view the facilities that the IoP has to offer and to hear first-hand experiences from students both past and present.

View here.

mhhe: Self Labelling and Identity

We call mad people lots of names. Most of them are not meant to be complimentary. But what do mad people call themselves? Do they accept labels that others stick on them? Do they apply their own labels? Why might one person choose a different label than another? This is a short documentary in which twelve Toronto activists discuss how they identify themselves.

Documentaries are one of Ryerson University's online learning tools, used by instructors to spark discussion in the online student forums. This documentary is a part of unique and engaging online course called "Mad People's History," developed by Digital Education Strategies at The Chang School and David Reville, an instructor with the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson University.

View online resource

mhhe: Student Mental Health

University life can be exciting for students, but can also engender frustration and isolation. Students with mental health problems may find it difficult to ask for help - appropriate services may be lacking and/or they may fear the stigma that can result from disclosure.

For students on professional programmes, the need to prove oneself as ‘fit for practice' can be the source of additional stress. The development of appropriate values and attitudes requires a focus on the self. This can be an emotional journey, especially for students who are also users of services.

In this section, you will find guidelines and publications; some examples of institutional policies; guidance on developing an inclusive curriculum, and on fitness to practice issues; event reports and links.

You can access other websites on student mental health here.

Please contact us with suggestions for ways of improving this section of the site.

1.
mhhe: Teaching Qualitative Research Methods at Undergraduate Level

This resource was developed by the TQRMUL working group and funded by the Higher Education Academy Psychology Network.

Each of the five interviews with undergraduate students (i.e. ‘Shazia', ‘Alexander', ‘Louise', ‘Trevor' and ‘Deborah') on the subject of friendship, have been presented in four consecutive sections. These four sections are available in video and audio only formats and are designed to enable both immediate play and download options. They are intended to support the teaching of qualitative research methods and are free to download and use. Transcripts using Jeffersonian and Playscript conventions for each interview are also provided.

The dataset is designed to support analyses using a variety of qualitative analytic approaches (e.g. Grounded Theory, Discourse Analysis, Conversation Analysis; and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). A user guide is also available providing more details on the resources and how to use them. Further detailed information and suggestions on how to use the dataset with specific analytic approaches can be found in the forthcoming book 'Doing qualitative research in psychology: a practical guide', edited by Mike Forrester (Sage publishers).

Visit the resource.

mhhe: Open Educational Resources in Simulation Learning: SIMSHARE

Simshare is collecting resources facilitating the use of simulations in learning. Simulation is a powerful and innovative form of teaching - it can enable active learning and the embedding of professional work practices in academic programmes - but there is no shareable body of simulation resources, with serious consequences for uptake. Simshare aims to create a repository of simulation resources. The project is part of the Academy/JISC Open Educational Resources Programme.

Find out more.

mhhe: Service user and carer involvement in re-commissioning

The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health have produced two publications about involving service users in the re-commissioning of day and vocational services:

Commissioner's guide to service user involvement

This is a concise guide for health and social care commissioners on how to involve people with direct experience of using mental health services in the re-commissioning of day and vocational services. It is based on the experiences of commissioners and service users who collaborated on re-designing and modernising local services.

An evaluation of mental health service user involvement in the re-commissioning of day and vocational services

This report provides insight into what worked during re-commissioning day and vocational services. Full of quotes from the people involved, it should help anyone wishing to embark on the re-commissioning of day and vocational services in their own area.

mhhe: Mental Health Inequalities: measuring what counts

This paper is based on a seminar organised jointly by Sainsbury Centre and the Department of Health in 2009.

It argues that public services do not routinely collect data on mental health inequalities and that the information they do collect is not used to its full potential.

It calls for better information to be collected and used to measure inequalities in mental health and the life chances of people with mental health problems.

Download the full seminar report (378 KB)
